“Humanity and Chance, a Sci-fi, Contemporary, Women, Romantic comedy, dystopian and utopian fiction that delves into the emotional depths of individuals within a society.” The narrative follows the emotional rollercoaster of two Black female characters, Humanity Howard and Chance Howard, much like the dynamic in Eleanor and Park. Both characters, initially distant and indifferent, gradually bond as they discover their shared bloodline, leading to a symbiotic relationship.

Despite their striking resemblance and apparent age, Humanity is Chance’s grandmother. Her story unfolds at New York Mount Sinai Hospital in 2024, where she awakens from a 64-year-long coma. The catalyst for her awakening was the realization that her newborn daughter, who would later become Chance’s mother, was not the biological child of her deceased husband, John Howard. This revelation, reminiscent of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, sets in motion a series of events that lead to the resolution of Humanity’s inner turmoil —a dissociation of the self that originated during her teenage years.

Chance self-isolates yet befriends Max, a dog who can speak due to an artificial intelligence device connected to his prefrontal cortex, which will cause the mad dog disease and carnage of thousands of dogs and humans in New York. Bearing the burden of her deceased mother’s tragic romantic story, she procrastinates yet falls in love with Bob Denver, wherein she suffers racism, antagonism, and forgery.

The search for Humanity’s relatives seems disappointing. However, Humanity’s and Chance’s reunion occurs by chance. Aiming to escape the similar dystopian realms of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Humanity drags Sammy, Chance, Bob, and friends toward a utopian world.

The importance of guiding humanity in the fight against self-extinction.
